Elephant Infomation - DLO

Types
There are two types of different elephants.
There are African elephants and Indian elephants.
An African elephant is much bigger than an Indian elephant.
You can tell by its larger tusks and ears. Also by its grey wrinkly
skin.

Special Features
Elephants can grow up to 11 feet tall and weigh up to 13,000
pounds. There are many features such as long sharp tusks and
enormous ears. Elephants use their ears to cool off when hot.
Elephant's tusks can grow up to 10 feet long and can be used
to scrape bark off trees.

Diet
Elephants are known to be herbivore animals. This means they
eat plants, instead of meat. The diet of an elephant is very
simple. They eat foods such as leaves, roots, fruits, and twigs.
An elephant can eat up to 40,000 pounds of food and can drink
up to 30 gallons of water.

Endangerment
Each day more than 100 elephants get killed and are being
slaughtered in everyday life. In the year, 1978 in the United
States of America, elephants were listed as one of the
endangered animals. Kenya decided to ban shooting elephants
due to this issue.

The Elephant's trunk
The nose and the upper lip is known to be the trunk. An
elephant's trunk can carry up to 770 pounds. The average
weight for an elephant's trunk is usually 400 pounds. Did you
know that elephants are the only animals that can snorkel on
their own!

Elephant’s uses
Elephant tusks are a valuable source. They're very special
because they are rare. An ivory tusk costs at least $1500 to
$2500. Ivory is used to make pool balls and piano keys. It can
also be used to make expensive art and sculptures.

Conclusion
Overall, I believe that elephants are special and valuable
animals. They should be treated with respect, or else these
mammals will no longer be around to enjoy at zoo's or survive
in the wild.
